Tundra


  • The coldest and the driest  of the biomes. 
  • Precipitation 5-10 inches per year. 

  • Long winters with temperatures that can get to -50 degrees Fahrenheit. Summers typically  2 months long.   

  • Permafrost- the ground completely thaws leaving a layer frozen year round.  The only roots that can grow in the shallow soil are moss, lichen, and some grass.  Very little NPP because of this.

  • NPP (Net Primary Productivity) is the amount of sugar being produced through photosynthesis.  The less NPP the less expected animals.
