- Two types- Cold desert (largest is Antarctica) and hot deserts (largest is the Sahara).
- Deserts make about roughly one fifth of the surface of the earth.
- Extreme temperatures in both types.
- Cold desert can reach -100 F. Hot desert over 100 F.
- Less than five inches of rainfall in a year.
- Plants are mostly found in the hot deserts which include cactus. Any plant in a hot desert must be adapted to conserve water.
- Animals are the types with little need for water. Includes reptiles, small mammals and kangaroo rats.
Students:
Assume you were on an episode of survivor. What types of equipment, skills and general knowledge would you want to get by in a hot desert? What about a cold desert? If you were trying to survive which of the two would you rather be in? Email me a three to five page paper answering these questions. Use a minimum of three sources. Due in two weeks.
