Desert

  • Two types- Cold desert (largest is Antarctica) and hot deserts (largest is the Sahara).

  • Deserts make about roughly one fifth of the surface of the earth.

  • Extreme temperatures in both types.

  • Cold desert can reach -100 F.  Hot desert over 100 F.

  • Less than five inches of rainfall in a year.

  • Plants are mostly found in the hot deserts which include cactus.  Any plant in a hot desert must be adapted to conserve water.

  • Animals are the types with little need for water.  Includes reptiles, small mammals and kangaroo rats.

Students:

Assume you were on an episode of survivor.  What types of equipment, skills and general knowledge would you want to get by in a hot desert?  What about a cold desert?  If you were trying to survive which of the two would you rather be in?  Email me a three to five page paper answering these questions.  Use a minimum of three sources.  Due in two weeks.
